For a 3.5-room flat, a removal company costs about CHF 1,250, or about CHF 2,160 with furniture assembly and the final cleaning. On top comes the deposit for the new flat, which can be up to three months' rent.
01What a removal company costs

02The costs people forget
- The deposit for the new flat. A landlord may ask for up to three months' rent (Code of Obligations, art. 257e), and you often pay it before the old one comes back.
- Rent for two flats at once, when the notice period of the old one and the start of the new one do not line up.
- Hours beyond the estimate. The same site gives CHF 100 to 150 an hour, depending on how many movers are needed.
- Small things that add up: boxes, curtains that do not fit, a new lamp, the change of address, a day off work.
03How to plan for it
Add the move, the deposit and a month of double rent, and save that amount before you sign. The tight weeks are the ones around getting the keys. The new deposit has gone out, both rents may be due, and the old deposit has not come back yet. For a 3.5-room flat at CHF 2,000 rent, that is CHF 2,160 plus up to CHF 6,000 for the deposit plus CHF 2,000 of overlap: up to about CHF 10,000, most of it the deposit, which you get back later.
